Installing hi-tech sound systems in the Masaajid

QUESTION:

Is it correct to install sound systems in the Masaajid that enhance the voice of the reciter?

ANSWER:

Usage of the microphone is to amplify the voice of the reciter so that it reaches the huge crowds that are present for Salaah. This can be achieved by using a simple, straight-forward sound system which amplifies the voice of the Imaam. The sound system described by you in the query seems to be one that is used for entertainment, where an echoing sound is given off, leaving behind an enjoyable rebounding sound. Salaah is in no way a form of entertainment, rather it is a means of connecting with Allah Ta’ala, hence we are not in favour of using such sound systems.

Unfortunately, we have focussed on installing hi-tech sound systems and equipment in the Masajid, but the heart remains dead and void of Allah’s love and spirituality. Hadrat Huzaifah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that concentration and devotion in Salaah will be the first thing to be taken away from the Ummat. The same has been mentioned from Hadrat Abu Darda Radiallahu Anhu. Unfortunately, this is the reality of our Salaah.  In conclusion, we do not approve of using such sound systems for Salaah which are primarily used for entertainment.
