QUESTION:
Is it permissible to say “Jumuah Mubarak” or is it a Bid’ah? How should one respond to such messages?
ANSWER:
The greeting of ‘Jumuah Mubarak’ is not proven from the Quraan Majid or the Ahadith of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Since there is no proof for the said greeting we should refrain from circulating ‘Jumuah Mubarak’ messages or greeting others with the words ‘Jumuah Mubarak.’
We have been taught to greet each other with Salaam on every occasion, hence we should greet fellow Muslims with the greeting of Salaam on the day of Jumuah as well. Initiating something new in Deen without any basis is a Bid’at (innovation) and is rejected as understood from the narration quoted below:
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ.(صحيح مسلم #4513)
