Keratin in hair shampoos

Question:-

Is the use of shampoo and conditioner that contain liquid keratin permissible?

Answer:-

We understand that keratin is derived from the feathers, horns, wool etc. of different animals, hence, using it in its original form will be acceptable. However, whilst keratin is a natural protein, products (such as shampoos, conditioners etc.) are made with several other added ingredients, including a chemical called formaldehyde. The Cancer Society warns that formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. This means that it may cause cancer, or help cancer to grow.  We learn from the principles derived from the Quraan Sharif that one should protect his health by utilising beneficial items and refrain from items that are harmful to one’s health. Based on this principle, one should refrain from utilising products that contain ingredients that are cancerous.

أصول الطب ثلاثة: حفظ الصحة باستعمال الأمور النافعة، والحمية من الأمور الضارة، ودفع ما يعرض للبدن من المؤذيات.

ومسائل الطب كلها تدور على هذه القواعد.

وقد نبه القرآن عليها في قوله تعالى في حفظ الصحة ودفع المؤذي: {وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلا تُسْرِفُوا} ، [لأعراف: من الآية31] ، فأمر الله بالأكل والشرب اللذي لا تستقيم الأبدان إلا بهما، وأطلق ذلك ليدل على أن المأكول والمشروب بحسب ما يلائم الإنسان، وينفعه في كل وقت وحال. ونهى عن الإسراف في ذلك، إما بالزيادة في كثرة المأكولات والمشروبات، وإما بالتخليط في المطعوم والأوقات، وهذا حمية عن كل ما يؤذي الإنسان. فإذا كان القوت الضروري من الطعام والشراب يصير بحالة يتأذى منه البدن ويتضرر منع منه

وكذلك أباح الله للمريض التيمم إذا كان استعمال الماء يضره، حمية له عن المضرات كلها (القواعد الحسان لتفيسر القراٰن ص 109ج1)
