Kissing The Quraan Sharif
QUESTION:
A person is of the belief that it is a Bid’ah to kiss the Quraan Sharif and Islamic literature. Is this true?
ANSWER:
It is permissible to kiss the Quraan Majeed out of respect and reverence. This is established from multiple Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum. Similarly, to kiss any other Islamic literature is also permissible as this is part of the etiquette of the Quraan Majeed and Deeni knowledge. Allah Ta’ala says in the Quraan Majeed:
وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ (الحجّ آ:32)
“And whosoever honours the symbols (salient features) of Allah, then it is indeed from the piety of the heart.”
Consider the following statement of Abdullah ibn Mubarak Rahimahullah:
قَالَ عَبْدٌ اللهِ ابنُ المُبارَكِ: مَنْ تهاوَنَ بالأدَبِ عُوقِبَ بحِرمانِ السُّنَنِ، ومَن تهاوَنَ بالسُّنَنِ عُوقِبَ بحِرمانِ الفرائِضِ، ومَن تهاوَنَ بالفرائِضِ عُوقِبَ بحِرمانِ المَعرِفةِ (شعب الإيمان 4/559)
“The one who will consider the various etiquettes of Deen as insignificant will be deprived of the Sunnats; the one who will consider the Sunnats of Deen as insignificant will be deprived of the Faraaidh; and the one who will consider the Faraaidh to be insignificant will be deprived of the recognition.”
The Salafis state that it is a Bid’ah (innovation) to kiss the Quraan Majeed. However, ironically their own Sheikh (Mentor), Sheikh Ibn Baaz, has written that it is permissible to kiss the Quraan Majeed. (Re: Fatawa Darul Uloom Zakariyya Vol.7 Pg. 726)
In conclusion, one may kiss the Quraan Majeed and other Islamic literature, as this is a way of revering and showing respect to it.
قال الشيخ عبد الغنـى الـمـجـددي في شرح سنن ابن ماجه: وفي القنية : تقبيل المصحف قيل : بدعة ، لكن روى عن عمر أنه كان يأخذ المصحف كل غداة ويقبله و يقول: عهد ربي ومنشور ربي عزوجل وكان عثمان الله يقبل المصحف ويمسه على وجهه.
(شرح سنن ابن ماجه،ص: ٢٦٣)
وروى الدارمي في سننه عن سليمان بن حرب عن حماد بن زيد عن أيوب عن ابن أبي مليكة أن عكرمة بن أبي جهل كان يضع المصحف على وجهه يقول : كلام ربي كلام ربي . إسناده منقطع ، لأن ابن أبي مليكة لم يدرك عكرمة بن أبي جهل.

لا نعلم دليلاً على شرعية تقبيله ، ولكن لو قبله الإنسان فلا بأس لأنه يروى عن عكرمة بن أبي جهل الصحابي الجليل ، أنه كان يقبل المصحف ، ويقول : هذا كلام ربي وبكل حال التقبيل لا حرج فيه. (مجموع فتاوی ابن باز:۲۸۹/۹)
