QUESTION:
Is liposuction surgery allowed even though it may be without a medical reason?
ANSWER:
It is not permissible for a woman to undergo a tummy tuck or liposuction as one is required to expose her Satr before the doctor without a valid Shari’ee reason. Due to necessity (such as treatment to one’s illness) the Satr may be exposed to the extent of necessity. Undergoing liposuction, breast enhancement, buttock lift, etc. is for cosmetic reasons and do not fall in the category of medical treatment hence exposing the Satr will not be permitted. Secondly, there are permanent risks involved such as infections, numbness, lumpiness in the skin, poor skin elasticity, scarring, etc. Thirdly, one will be changing the natural creation of Allah Ta’ala (by undergoing a tummy tuck procedure or liposuction) which is prohibited in the light of the Quraan Sharif. Allah Ta’ala states,
ولاضلنهم و لامنينهم و لامرنهم فليبتكن آذان الانعام و لامرنهم فليغيرن خلق الله و من يتخذ الشيطان وليا من دون الله فقد خسر خسرانا مبينا (النساء آ:119)
“Shaytaan said, and I will certainly lead them astray, and I will tempt them with false hopes and command them so they will slit the ears of cattle and I will command them so they shall alter the creation of Allah. And whoever takes the Shaytaan as a friend instead of Allah has incurred a clear loss”. (Al-Nisa 119)
In conclusion, liposuction is not permitted.
