QUESTION:
Is it permissible and advisable for a person to undertake metaphysical healing as an alternative to generic medicine?
ANSWER:
According to our understanding, ‘Metaphysical healing’ consists of various types of healing which includes acupuncture, usage of herbs and tea blends, aromatherapy (using of essential oils), yoga, and sound healing-which is referred to as Tibetan bowls (where musical sounds are created and used as a healing method) etc. Also, it includes healing with energy like Reiki bioenergy and other healing practices. From the above, we understand that these therapies seem to have connotations of Kufr, as well as acts that are prohibited in Shariah, hence it will not be permissible. Yes, if the treatment comprises purely of acupuncture or usage of essential oils, and is not accompanied by any other Haraam activity, then it will be permitted.
