QUESTION:
Are there any Ahaadeeth or commentary about the benefits of naming a child “Muhammad”?
ANSWER:
The name “Muhammad” is indeed a blessed name, as it is the name of our beloved leader and Master Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasalaam, who is most beloved to us. The name “Muhammad” and “Ahmad” are the most beloved names to Allah Ta’ala as Allah Ta’ala would not choose for His Nabi except those names that are beloved to Him. It is recorded in Shaami that whoever has a child and names him “Muhammad”, then he and his child will be in Jannah. This is narrated by Ibn Asaakir. [Shaami Pg.417 Vol.6] The people of Makkah Sharif observed plenty of blessings and sustenance in those homes wherein someone was named “Muhammad”. The reference for this is quoted below.
It is recorded in the Mawaa’iz (books in which lectures are compiled) of Hadrat Hakim Akhtar Saheb Rahimahullah that there are certain Muslim cemeteries in the world where only people with the name “Muhammad” are buried, and there are those cemeteries where only people with the name “Muhammad”, and their father’s bearing the name “Muhammad” are buried.
In conclusion, there can only be good in keeping the name of our beloved Master Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
أَنَّ اسْمَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَحْمَدَ أَحَبُّ إلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى مِنْ جَمِيعِ الْأَسْمَاءِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَخْتَرْ لِنَبِيِّهِ إلَّا مَا هُوَ أَحَبُّ إلَيْهِ هَذَا هُوَ الصَّوَابُ وَلَا يَجُوزُ حَمْلُهُ عَلَى الْإِطْلَاقِ اهـ. وَوَرَدَ ” «مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ مَوْلُودٌ فَسَمَّاهُ مُحَمَّدًا كَانَ هُوَ وَمَوْلُودُهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ» رَوَاهُ ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ عَنْ أُمَامَةَ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ السُّيُوطِيّ: هَذَا أَمْثَلُ حَدِيثٍ وَرَدَ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ وَإِسْنَادُهُ حَسَنٌ (رد المحتار ص417 ج6)
