Nisaab of Gold

May 6, 2024 | Zakaat

QUESTION:

The Nisaab of gold is calculated on 86 grams worth of gold. If one has 10 grams gold, does one have to pay Zakaah on it if the value exceeds the Nisaab amount? For example, I have only 50 grams gold but it is valued at approximately R5000.

ANSWER:

The Fuqaha have stated that Zakaat is Waajib when one owns 20 Mithqaal (87.48 grams) of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. This will be the ruling if one possesses only gold, or only silver and no other Zakaatable assets. However, if one possesses other Zakaatable assets such as cash, silver, gold, then owning the Nisaab of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver will no longer be necessary. In this instance, the value of the gold, silver and cash will be combined to determine whether one is required to discharge Zakaat or not.

For example, a person owns 5g of gold valued at R5500.00, 100g of silver valued at R1400.00, and R5000.00 cash. When all three amounts are combined and it surpasses the Nisaab, then Zakaat will be due on the total amount of R11 900.00.

On the other hand, if one possesses 60g of gold valued at R30 000.00 and this is the only Zakaatable asset that he possesses, then he will not be required to discharge Zakaat as 60 grams of gold is less than the Zakaat Nisaab. We hope that the above explanation is understood.
