Zakaah on gold

Sep 30, 2023 | Zakaat

QUESTION:

Please provide clarity on Zakaah on gold. Does the gold have to be equal to, or more than a specific amount in grams, in order for Zakaah to be liable?

ANSWER:

Zakaat will be Waajib when one has 20 Mithqaal (87.48 grams) of gold in one’s possession for one lunar year. This will be the ruling if one possesses only gold, and no other Zakaatable assets. However, if one possesses cash, silver, and gold, then having the stipulated amount of 87.48g of gold will not be necessary. In this instance, the value of the gold, silver and cash will be combined to determine whether one is Zakaatable or not. For example, a person owns 5g of gold valued at R5500.00, 100g of silver valued at R1400.00, and R5000.00 cash. When all three amounts are combined and it surpasses the Nisaab, then Zakaat will be due on the total amount of R11 900.00.
