QUESTION:
1. How should a person make Niyyah before Salaah? Is there a special Dua before starting Salaah?
2. Is it correct to recite some Duas and Azkar on food items for dead people on Thursdays? We don’t believe that it’s compulsory, but we do it occasionally for Thawaab for our loved ones who have passed on. is it true that the Marhoomeen visit us every Thursday?
ANSWER:
1. There is no wording or verbal intention that one is required to articulate to commence Salaah. Making a Niyyat in the heart will suffice. One should have an intention (in the heart) of following the Imaam in the four Fardh of Zuhr or Asr, etc. or one may intend following the Imaam in the Salaah that he is performing. [Re:- Fataawa Uthmaniyyah Pg.83 Vol.2] A verbal intention is for beginners so that they form a habit of making a Niyyat. Once they are in the habit of making an intention then making a Niyyat in the heart will suffice. The need of a verbal intention will no longer remain.
2. This practice is not substantiated from the Quraan or Hadith hence it should be discarded. [Kitaabun Nawaazil Pg.588/589 Vol.1]
