QUESTION:
I have heard that hair from underarm should be plucked and it’s not permissible to shave it with a razor, is this correct?
ANSWER:
The Hadith of Bukhari Sharif states that plucking the hair of the armpit is a Sunnah of Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam:
عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه مرفوعا الفِطرة خَمْسٌ: الخِتَان والاسْتِحدَاد وقَصُّ الشَّارِب وتَقلِيمُ الأَظفَارِ ونَتْفُ الإِبِط (صحيح البخاري # 5890)
Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu reports that Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said: “Five things are acts of Fitrah (Sunnah): to circumcise, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, and plucking the hair of the armpit.”
The above-mentioned Hadith is clear that the underarm hair should be plucked which is the actual teaching of Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. However, both males and females may also remove the underarm hair using a blade. Notwithstanding the above, males should remove the pubic hair using a blade whilst it is best for females to pluck the pubic hair.
