QUESTION:
Where in the Quraan Sharif is it mentioned that music is Haraam?
ANSWER:
1. The Quraan Sharif states, “Fool as many of them as you can with your voice (with music and everything else that calls them to sin), attack them with your cavalry and infantry (with all your might), and be a partner in their wealth and their children, and promise them. The promises that Shaytaan makes are only deceptive.” [Surah Bani Israeel; Verse 64]
It is recorded in Tafseer Tabri, the voice of Shaytaan refers to music and entertainment. Mujaahid Rahimahullah also mentions that it refers to music.
2. The following verse of Surah Luqman also indicates towards the impermissibility of music. Allah Ta’ala states:
There are some people who purchase futile discourse to deviate from Allah’s path without knowledge and they mock it (Islam). There shall be a humiliating punishment for these people.
Ibn Masood Radiallahu Anhu, Nakhi’ee Rahimahullah and Hassan Basri Rahimahullah state that it refers to music. There is also mention of punishment in this verse which indicates that it is a major sin and Haraam.
