QUESTION:
Please advise if while travelling, it is difficult to locate a Halaal food outlet, are we permitted to purchase food from restaurants that serve alcohol? The food items are kept separately from other Haraam ingredients like meat and alcohol, to avoid contamination.
ANSWER:
If you are referring to purchasing prepared or cooked food from a restaurant that serves alcohol and other Haraam products, then one should strictly refrain from doing so. There is absolutely no certainty that their products are Halaal, as there always exists a possibility of contamination. Also, what guarantee is there that wine or any other Haraam ingredient, hasn’t been used in the preparation of the dish. Many of the seafood dishes contain wine, yet we consider seafood to be Halaal, as there is no question of slaughtering in accordance to Shariah, as in the case of animals. In conclusion, one should totally refrain from outlets that sell Haraam food, irrespective of the assurance they give us. Fruit is easily available throughout the world, hence one could consume fresh fruit, dates, various types of nuts, etc. during one’s journey, which serves as a meal, and are nutritious and healthy.
