QUESTION:
Would it be permissible to participate in the Quraan competitions currently being held around the country, and around the world?
ANSWER:
Recitation of the Quraan Sharif is not for competitions. These competitions were never held in the history of Islam. They comprise of show, ostentation, pride, etc. and various other evils and are held in hotels at times which are venues of vice and evil. There is no Ikhlaas as the reader is reciting for a prize whereas the Quraan Sharif is supposed to be recited solely for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. The Quraan Sharif is the Kitaab of Allah Ta’ala by which one’s gains proximity to his Creator and takes heed from the incidents mentioned therein. Also, females are now engaging in these competitions which is another Fitnah and evil. In conclusion, Quraan Sharif competitions are impermissible.
