QUESTION:
Recently, Twitter starting paying people a percentage of the advertising revenue. To qualify for the advertising revenue, one must have 500 or more followers, and a minimum of 3 million impressions for 3 consecutive months. One has to also be “verified”. To be verified, it costs R200 per month. I tweet quite a bit and have qualified and received my first payment. My tweets are only about politics, nothing Haraam, no pictures or videos. Is this type of income permissible?
ANSWER:
If you tweet a product that is for sale, and receive a bonus or gift from Twitter for reaching many subscribers, then such a bonus or gift is in order. The R200.00 is the admin cost charged by Twitter to verify that you are a reliable subscriber. We understand that you tweet posts on politics and nothing impermissible. However, you should ensure that the posts are not false, nor does it comprise of Gheebat or mocking and belittling others, as these are considered as Haraam in Shariah.
