Relabelling Products Without Consent

QUESTION:

A person buys olive oil with the intention to resell it. They want to change the label to another brand that is from another country, without that company’s consent. Am I party to this deception if I relabel the bottles for them?

ANSWER:

It will not be permissible for you to relabel them as that will be tantamount to deception. Yes, if the original company gives you consent, then it will be permissible. Alternatively, the second company may request the original company to sell the item unbranded and inform them that they will be branding it with their own brand.

Consider the following Hadith:

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ من حمل علينا السلاح فليس منا ومن غشنا، فليس منا‏ (‏رواه مسلم‏ # 170)‏‏

Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “He who takes up arms against us is not from amongst us, and he who deceives us is not from amongst us.”
