Sahn is part of the Masjid

Question:-

Is the Sahn a part of the Masjid?

Answer:- 

The Sahn is a part of the Masjid in the sense that, the rules pertaining to the Masjid is applicable to the Sahn as well. Also, the Sahn is joined to the Masjid and there is no path that separates the Sahn from the Masjid, hence, the Musallis following the Imaam in Salaah from the Sahn is valid and in order.

وذكر في البحر عن المجتبى أن فناء المسجد له حكم المسجد، ثم قال: وبه علم أن الاقتداء من صحن الخانقاه الشيخونية بالإمام في المحراب صحيح وإن لم تتصل الصفوف لأن الصحن فناء المسجد، وكذا اقتداء من بالخلاوي السفلية صحيح لأن أبوابها في فناء المسجد إلخ، ويأتي تمام عبارته. وفي الخزائن: فناء المسجد هو ما اتصل به وليس بينه وبينه طريق. اهـ. (الدر المختار ص585 ج1)
