Salaami

QUESTION:

During the past, the people who practice ‘Salaami’ would come to the Masjid and carry out this act at the back of the Masjid after the Salaah. They don’t believe that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is present nor do they perform any rituals. They stand while reciting out of respect for the Durood and Salaam.  Keeping in mind that so many of them have intense love for Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, and majority of them even pass away on a Friday, they have stopped coming to the Masjid after being prohibited from carrying out this action. Considering that we do not classify them as Kaafir, why can we not be tolerant to their practice?

ANSWER:

The custom of offering Salaam in the manner described in the query (famously known as Salaami) is categorized as a Bid’ah (innovation).

Claiming that the people offering Salaami do not hold the belief that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is present is a very bold claim, as it is very difficult to ascertain the intention of each and every person.

Regarding innovations, Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam states:

Aisha Radiallahu Anha narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Whoever innovates a new practice in our Deen (which is not part of it) then it will be rejected.” [Muslim]

On one occasion, a group of people had gathered and were loudly reciting Durood upon Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. After seeing this, the illustrious Sahaabi, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ood Radiallahu Anhu had passed the verdict of such an act being a Bid’ah (innovation), and classified such people as innovators.

Furthermore, the Fuqahaa have written that one should not use the words “Ya Rasulallah” or “Ya Nabi” if one is not at the Rawdah Mubaarak, as it creates the impression or misunderstanding that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is omnipresent, whereas this is a quality exclusive to Allah Ta’ala.

Notwithstanding the above, how can one ever be tolerant towards someone who is committing a wrong action in the house of Allah Ta’ala and changing the Deen of Allah Ta’ala? Will a person ever tolerate someone coming into his own home and changing his house rules, or he does something wrong in his house? So, why do we have this type of attitude when it comes to the Deen and House of Allah Ta’ala.
