Shari Ruling Regarding a “Honeymoon”

May 7, 2024 | Marriage And Divorce

QUESTION:

What is the Islamic ruling regarding a “honeymoon”?

ANSWER:

The word ‘honeymoon’ is thought to have originated in medieval times. At that time, it was common for newly-wed couples to drink mead (a fermented beverage made from honey) for a moon cycle (30 days) after their wedding. This tradition was believed to bring good luck and fertility to the couple.

It is clear from the above that the custom of honeymoon is foreign to Islam. Such as custom was never heard of during the lifetime of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, Sahaabah, Tabi’een, Tabe Tabi’een, pious predecessors, etc. The custom of a honeymoon was adopted from the disbelievers. If a Muslim couple live their life in accordance with Shariah, then their entire life will be a “honeymoon” until death, while the honeymoon of the Kuffar lasts for just one week and thereafter their lives are filled with misery.

Muslims are taught to remain chaste and pure until Nikah to the extent that there is no talking or interaction between the couple  before Nikah. After Nikah, the couple start their journey of life with the Ibaadat of Allah Ta’ala in a pure environment where the mercy of Allah Ta’ala descends, and not in hotel rooms where the curse of Allah is descending every moment. The worst forms of sin take place in hotels, and it is void of all forms of blessings. When the marriage of a believer commences in such a pure manner, then only Khair and goodness can be expected from such a union, while a marriage that commences in an impure environment will only bear negative consequences. In conclusion, we as Muslims should follow our way of life chalked out for us by Allah and His Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, wherein lies our success in this world and the hereafter.

ALLAH TA’ALA ALONE IN HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS BEST!
