Sheikhul Hind’s Attribution

QUESTION:

Sheikhul Hind Rahimahullah was born in Bareli. Would it be fitting to call him Barelwi?

ANSWER:

Yes, Shaykhul Hind, Moulana Mahmoodul Hasan (Rahimahullah) was born in Bareli but this does not mean that he was a ‘Barelwi’.

As far as his attribution is concerned, he was more famously called a Deobandi. Hence, he was known as Moulana Mahmoodul Hasan Deobandi. For an excellent read regarding his life and biography, you may read the Kitaab prepared by Taalimi Board KZN which is available on their website.
