Surplus Funds Intended For Masjid

QUESTION:

We have a Jamaat Khana in a shopping centre where we collect Lillah funds on Fridays for maintenance, etc. We currently have a surplus amount of funds which has accumulated after paying expenses. Please advise if these funds can be used for another Masjid or Lillah project?

ANSWER:

At the time of collection, if it was made clear to the donors that the money donated will be utilized for one Masjid only, it will not be permissible to utilize it for another Musallah. However, if it was made clear to the donors that the money donated will be utilized for one Masjid and one Musallah collectively, it will be permissible to utilize it collectively for both the Masjid and Musallah.
