Teaching students to recite with Tajweed
QUESTION:-
I teach Quraan with Tajweed to two Sudanese students. We have come across some differences in the rules, for example, where we make a compulsory waqf, they would continue reciting, as well as the pronunciation of letters like “Ghain”. Should I emphasize on correcting these differences?
ANSWER:-
It is necessary to recite the Quraan Majeed with Tajweed. Not adhering to the laws of Tajweed renders one sinful. The errors that occur during recitation are of two types:
1. Lahn-e-Jali – A major error such as reciting one letter in place of another. For example, reciting the letter Kaaf in place of Qaaf.
2. Lahn–e-Khafi – A minor error such as not making Ikhfa, Idghaam etc.
The experts, or scholars, in the field of Qiraat have written that if a person commits a major error which is known as ‘Lahn-e-Jali’, then he will be sinful, and the one who is listening to the recitation will also be sinful. Hence, such a mistake should not be overlooked, rather one should correct the student’s error immediately. Regarding Lahn-e-Khafi, if a person reciting the Quraan commits a Lahn-e-Khafi, then although he will not be sinful, one should avoid doing so as it is against the Adaab of the Quraan-e-Majeed.
Based on the above, it is necessary for the teacher to correct the pronunciation of the student if the letter “Ghain” is not pronounced correctly, irrespective of the Madhab that the student follows. Continuous repetition of the correct pronunciation will prove beneficial.
With regards to the rules of Waqf, the letter “ط” indicates that one should stop, as the subject matter being discussed in the verse is now complete, whilst the letter “ج” indicates that it is preferable to stop, as the subject matter of the verse has been complete, and it further enhances the Qiraat. Now that the student has come to study under you, you as the teacher should teach the student according to our method of recitation, Waqf, etc. Hence, they should make Waqf in those places where we are required to make Waqf.
