The Names of Allah Ta’ala

QUESTION:

According to the Wazifah of reciting the 4 Names of Allah, one of the Names mentioned is “Ya Naasiru”. I was reading the 99 Names of Allah and realized that this Name isn’t mentioned therein. Would it still be ok to read this Name, or am I reading the wrong Name?

ANSWER:

There are 99 names of Allah Ta’ala recorded in one narration. It does not mean that the names of Allah Ta’ala are restricted to 99 only. Imaam Raazi Rahimahullah has written in Tafsir-e-Kabir, “There are 4000 names of Allah. 1000 names are listed in the Quraan Sharif and authentic narrations, 1000 have been recorded in the Torah, 1000 in the Injeel, and 1000 in the Zaboor. It is also stated that 1000 are recorded in the Lowhe-Mahfooz.” [Bismillah Ke Lataa’if Wa Haqaa’iq Pg.47]

The view of Allama Gangohi Rahimahullah is recorded in ‘Kawkabud Durri’ that the names of Allah Ta’ala are unlimited.  Allama Nawawi Rahimahullah states in the commentary of Muslim Sharif that the blessed names of Allah Ta’ala are more than 1000. Allama Aaloosi Baghdadi Rahimahullah narrates from the Sufis, that the names of Allah cannot be enumerated. These names are concealed like the Ism-e-Aazam according to some commentators of Hadith hence, the actual number of names are unknown. [Bismillah Ke Lataa’if Wa Haqaa’iq Pg.47]

Based on the above explanation, the name ‘An-Naasir’ could be mentioned in another narration besides the narration where 99 names of Allah are recorded. The names of Allah are from Allah Ta’ala, according to the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah, hence these names cannot be made up using logic or one’s intelligence.  [Bismillah Ke Lataa’if Wa Haqaa’iq Pg.48]
