Hadrat Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqas Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Whoever says the following when he hears the Muadhin, Allah Ta’ala shall forgive him his sins.”
The supplication is as follows:
وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا، وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولًا، وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا
“And I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah; He is alone and has no partner; and that Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is His servant and Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as a Sustainer, Islam as my religion and Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam as a Messenger.” [Sahih Muslim]
Hadrat Maymoonah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam stood between the row of the men and that of the women, and said, “O assembly of women! When you hear the Adhaan of this Abyssinnian and his Iqaamah, you must repeat what he says. If you do so, you shall receive one million rewards for each letter.” Hadrat Umar Radiallahu Anhu asked, “If this is for the women, what is the reward for the men?” He replied: “Double that, O Umar!” [Tabraani]
Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates: “We were in the company of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam when Hadrat Bilaal Radiallahu Anhu stood up and called out the Adhaan. When he stopped, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ‘Whoever repeats what he said with full conviction shall enter Paradise.” [An-Nasa’i]
Hadrat Abdullah bin Umar Radiallahu Anhu narrates that a person said: “O Rasulullah! The Muadhins surpass us (in reward).” Rasulullah Salallahu Alaih Wasallam said: “Repeat what they say. And when you finish, ask whatever you desire (from Allah Ta’ala) and you will be given it.” [Sunan Abu Dawud]
We understand from the above narrations that there is great reward for responding to the Adhaan. Unfortunately, most of the people do not respond to the Adhaan, to the extent that people in the Masjid ignore the Adhaan and engage in conversation. We are taught to respect the Adhaan and respond by repeating the words of the Muazzin and thereafter we should request the intercession of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam by reciting the relevant Dua after Adhaan.
