QUESTION:
Will it be permissible for a woman to have a tummy tuck for beautification purposes for the husband, as he finds the stretched skin unsightly, as well as other enhancements on the body for the husband’s happiness. The procedure comprises of liposuction for the tummy, breast enhancement and buttock lift.
ANSWER:
Every facet of our life is governed by the laws of Shariah. Thus, it is necessary to abide by the laws of Shariah when beautifying and adorning oneself for one’s spouse. If a woman beautifies herself to please her husband, she will be rewarded, but if she violates the laws of Shariah in doing so then she will be sinful. In conclusion, she is not permitted to obey her husband if he commands her to violate the laws of Allah and His Rasul Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam in adorning herself.
عَنِ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سِمْعَانَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَا طَاعَةَ لِمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ (مشكوة المصابيح #3696)
Nawwas bin Sam’aan Radiallahu Anhu reports that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “There is no obedience for the creation when it involves disobedience to the Creator.”
Now coming to the query, it will not be permissible for a woman to undergo a tummy tuck as one will be required to expose her Satr before the doctor without a valid Shari’ee reason. Due to necessity (such as treatment to one’s illness) the Satr may be exposed to the extent of necessity. Undergoing liposuction, breast enhancement, buttock lift, etc. is for cosmetic reasons and does not fall in the category of medical treatment, hence exposing the Satr will not be permitted. Secondly, there are permanent risks involved such as infections, numbness, lumpiness in the skin, poor skin elasticity, scarring, etc. Thirdly, one will be changing the natural creation of Allah Ta’ala (by undergoing a tummy tuck procedure) which is prohibited in the light of the Quraan Sharif. Allah Ta’ala states:
ولاضلنهم و لامنينهم و لامرنهم فليبتكن آذان الانعام و لامرنهم فليغيرن خلق الله و من يتخذ الشيطان وليا من دون الله فقد خسر خسرانا مبينا (النساء آ:119)
“Shaytaan said, and I will certainly lead them astray, and I will tempt them with false hopes and command them so they will slit the ears of cattle and I will command them so they shall alter the creation of Allah. And whoever takes the Shaytaan as a friend instead of Allah has incurred a clear loss“. (Al-Nisa 119)
In conclusion, the above procedure will not be permitted.
