Visiting a Sangoma for treatment

Nov 8, 2023 | Miscellaneous

QUESTION:

Is it permissible to go to a Sangoma for treatment related to Sihr and Jadoo, or for any other issue. I recently heard of someone who’s business was going down as well as having marital issues, and they went to a Sangoma and found a big difference.

ANSWER:

It will not be permissible for one to visit a Sangoma for treatment, as their treatments include acts of Kufr and Shirk. By engaging in any acts of Kufr and Shirk one loses his Imaan. [Re: Fataawa Darul Uloom Zakariyya Vol:8 Pg:70]

Yes, we do not doubt that the person may have experienced a difference as Shaytaan has been granted various abilities. In majority of the treatments executed by the Sangomas, assistance is sought from Shaytaan which is Kufr, hence a Muslim seeking such assistance loses his Imaan.

If he or she happens to leave the world in such a state without repenting and renewing his or her Imaan, one will be perpetually doomed to the fire of Jahannam. It is indeed the height of foolishness that a person is prepared to trade in his or her Imaan for some Haraam treatment and then too, there is no certainty in it proving beneficial. On the other hand, we have verses of the Quraan Sharif and Ahadith of Rasulullah Salallahu Alahi Wasallam that are 100% authentic and guaranteed to be beneficial, even though the results may be witnessed after some time. In conclusion, we as Muslim should solve our problems through Salaah, Dua, recitation of verses of the Quraan Sharif and Duas from the Hadith Sharif, discharging charity, etc.
