QUESTION:
We were taught from a young age to avoid the ocean from Asr time onwards into the night, due to the presence of Jinnaat. Is there any validation for this in Shariah?
ANSWER:
It is recorded in Hujjatulla-hil-Baaligah that the Jinn spread out in the evening as they are darkness in nature. They therefore attain joy and happiness when it is dark and spread out.
It is also recorded in the Kitaabs of Hadith that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam feared for the children when the Jinn would spread out, that they could be afflicted with insanity and killed, as Shaytaan has been granted the ability to do so. Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam informed us that it is not appropriate to expose oneself to Fitnah, and protecting oneself is more resolute.
It is for this reason that we are prevented from entering the ocean in the evenings and advised to keep the children indoors.
أقول: أما انتشار الجن عند المساء فلكونهم ظلمانيين في أصل الفطرة فيحصل لهم عن انتشار الظلمة ابتهاج وسرور فينتشرون (حجة الله البالغة ص523 ج2)
خشيَ – صلى الله عليه وسلم – على الصبيان عند انتشار الجن أن تُلمَّ بهم فتَصرَعَهم؛ فإن الشيطانَ قد أعطاه اللهُ تعالى قوةً عليه، وأعلَمَنا النَّبِيُّ – صلى الله عليه وسلم – أن التعرُّضَ للفتن مما لا ينبغي، وأن الاحترازَ منها أحزمُ، (الامع الصبيح ص220 ج14)
قال المهلب: خشى النبى – عليه السلام – على الصبيان عند انتشار الجن أن تلم بهم فتصرعهم، فإن الشيطان قد أعطاه الله قوة على هذا، وقد علمنا رسول الله أن التعرض للفتن مما لا ينبغى، فإن الاحتراس منها أحزم (شرح صحيح البخاري لابن بطال ص76 ج6)
