QUESTION:
My sister served as an accountant in a life insurance firm (that also dealt with retirement annuities, loans) for several years, but resigned upon discovering it’s in conflict with Islamic principles. She now follows specific guidelines for the money she earned, using it for certain purposes like holidays, while refraining from consuming anything purchased with that money. She feels compelled to take a bath if she touches such items. Does this align with Islamic law, or is she just rationalizing the use of her money? What would be the best thing she should do with the money she earned while working at that company
ANSWER:
Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam cursed the one who consumes interest, pays interest, records the transaction, and witnesses the transaction, hence working for an insurance company is not permitted. [Mishkaat Pg.244] However, some scholars have mentioned that the income derived is categorized as Makrooh (abhorred) and not Haraam, although it will be best not to derive any benefit from the income.
