Zakaat on unused items

Question:-

I wanted to know a Mas’ala regarding Zakaat. I understand that things bought for personal use are exempted from Zakaat, whether clothing or otherwise. However, I heard from someone that Zakaat is due on clothing that is not worn even once a year like a wedding dress, or any other item that is not in use and just lying in one’s possession. Is this correct?

Answer:-

The Mas’ala explained is incorrect. Any clothing or items purchased for personal use such as, vehicles etc. are exempted from Zakaat, irrespective of whether one uses the items or not.

وهو أن يكون مالكاً لمقدار النصاب، فاضلاً عن مسكنه وثيابه وأثاثه وفرسه وسلاحه وعبيده (منحة السلوك في شرح تحفة الملوك ص246 ج1)
