Praising ourselves

Feb 15, 2023 | Tabligh / Tazkiya

Question:-

My kids ask that Allah Ta’ala asks us to praise Him, yet we are not allowed to praise ourselves. What response should I give them?

Answer:-

Allah Ta’ala is the Creator of the entire universe hence, only He is worthy of praise. The Quraan Sharif states, “He is Worthy of all praise, The Exalted.” The achievements of the human being are from Allah Ta’ala alone, and cannot be achieved through one’s capabilities, making the human being not worthy of any praise. In fact, he should be praising Allah Ta’ala for showering His unlimited bounties and favours upon him.

Secondly, when a human being praises himself, it is an indication of pride within him which is considered as Haraam in Shariah. It is on this basis that we are not permitted to praise ourselves. We hope that the above explanation answers your query. I have tried to simplify it to the best of my ability.

ALLAH TA’ALA KNOWS BEST!
