Question:-
Is it permissible to call a grape orchard ‘Karam’?
Answer:-
The Hadith of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam states that we should not use the term ‘Karam’ for a vineyard, we should rather use the term ‘Hadaa’iq-ul-Aa’naab’, which literally translates as, ‘gardens of grapes’.
عن أبي هريرة , أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ” لا تقولوا: الكرم فإنما الكرم الرجل المسلم , ولكن قولوا: حدائق الأعناب ” شرح مشكل الاثار ص122 ج4
Allama Nawawi Rahimahullah has written in his commentary of Muslim Sharif that it is Makrooh to use the term ‘Karam’ as the Arabs would use the term ‘Karam’ for the grapevine, as well as grapes, and for wine that was produced from grapes. They would refer to wine as ‘Karam’, as it is produced from grapes. It is Makrooh to use the term ‘Karam’ as it could be used in terms of meaning ‘kindness and generosity’ as well. This is mentioned in another narration wherein Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam states, “Do not say ‘Karam’ for verily ‘Karam’ is the heart of a believer.”
لا تقولوا الكرم ولكن قولوا العنب والحبلة أما الحبلة فبفتح الحاء المهملة وبفتح الباء وإسكانها وهي شجر العنب ففي هذه الأحاديث كراهة تسمية العنب كرما بل يقال عنب أو حبلة قال العلماء سبب كراهة ذلك أن لفظة الكرم كانت العرب تطلقها على شجر العنب وعلى العنب وعلى الخمر المتخذة من العنب سموها كرما لكونها متخذة منه ولأنها تحمل على الكرم والسخاء فكره الشرع اطلاق هذه (شرح النووي علي مسلم ص4 ج15
عَنْ أَبيِ هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: ” لَا تَقُولُوا: الْكَرْمَ، فَإِنَّ الْكَرْمَ قَلْبُ الْمُؤْمِنِ «.شرح السنة للبغوي ص355 ج12
In conclusion, the vineyard may be referred to as ‘Hadaa’iq-ul-Aa’naab’ but not ‘Karam’, due to the above explanation.
