Responsibility of taking care of one’s mother

Question:-

We are two sisters and a brother.  My father passed away. Whose responsibility is it to take care of my mother, as my brother states that his family is not ready to serve my mother? The two sisters have looked after her, in spite of having their own familes to take care of.

Answer:-

The responsibility must be shared equally by all three siblings. Your brother should employ a nurse or helper to assist with your mother, if his family is not willing to assist at all whilst she is at his residence. If his family assists, then they will attain great rewards by Allah Ta’ala.

You and your sister have acted correctly in the sense that, have fulfilled your duty towards your husbands as well as your duty towards your mother. May Allah Ta’ala reward the two son-in-laws for their understanding and patience. Ameen!

In conclusion, the responsibility must be shared by all siblings.
