Question:-
As Muslims, can we engage in a photography business, where photos are taken for clients?
Answer:-
The Muftis have permitted photography due to necessity such as passport or I.D. photos, etc. [Re:- Kitaabun Nawaazil Pg.489 Vol.16] However, the need for passport and I.D photos no longer exist in our country as this is now digitally taken at the Home Affairs. However, there may still remain a need for photos to be taken for legal documents such as visa applications, etc. If photos are taken purely for such needs then on the basis of necessity, it will be permissible for one to run a business to take such photos.
However, many clients purchase additional photos due to receiving a greater discount on larger quantities. If a client requires two photos for a visa application for example, then it is not permissible for him to take any additional photos since his need will be fulfilled with just 2 photos. How does one control or restrict clients in such instances? It is also possible that one commences his business with the correct intention but gradually greed enters the heart, which results in taking unnecessary and even impermissible photos. We therefore totally discourage a Muslim from engaging in such a business even though it may have been initiated with the sole objective of taking necessary photos.
