Working for a company that services banks and insurance companies

Dec 1, 2021 | Employment / Commission

Question:-

1. I work for a company that manufactures computer software. The company services banks, insurance companies and other companies as well. Am I permitted to serve as an employee at such a company?

2. Can one’s premises be leased to an insurance company or an insurance broker?

Answer:-

1. You have stated in your query that the software company provides services to banks, insurance companies and provides other services as well. If majority of their income (that is 51% or more) is from Halaal avenues and 49% of their income is from Haraam avenues, such as banks and insurance companies, then the salary (income) from such a company will be permitted. However, if majority of their funds is from Haraam avenues then the salary acquired from such a company will not be permitted.

2. It will not be permissible to lease one’s premises to an insurance company or broker, since the income derived from such a business is Haraam.
