Females obtaining a driver’s license

Question:-

What is the ruling in regards to females obtaining a driver’s license?

Answer:-

Our Darul Ifta is not in favour of women driving under normal circumstances. However, in the case of an emergency such as an armed robbery there is concession for women to drive and get away. This is a daily occurrence here in South Africa, hence there is a need. This will obviously necessitate that she is able to drive, and in order to do so, she must be in possession of a valid driver’s license. On this basis, it will be permissible for her to acquire a learner’s and driver’s license. However, she should choose a female driving instructor and request a female examiner if possible for the driving test.
