Imaam not pulling the Madd in Salaah

Jan 31, 2023 | Imaamat, Tajweed

Question:-

1. Why do some Imaams not pull the small Madd when they read Quraan? I understand that there are other ways of Qiraat, but as far as I know, they also read according to Imaam Hafs? So, does this mean that you don’t need to pull those Madds? I have heard some of our local Imaams also do this.

2. Are you allowed to imitate the voices of the Imaams in their recitations? Whether it be the Imaams of the Haram or any other Imaam?
If it is not permissible and a person has being doing it for so long now that they naturally read like that without trying, do they have to make an effort not to read like that?

Answer:-

1. The Qurrah (that have studied and mastered the science of the different Qiraats) are aware of the rules of Tajweed and have been permitted to recite in the various dialects. Some of the Imaams of Qiraat make Qasr in Madd-e-Munfasil such as Imaam Soosi, meaning that they do not pull in Madd-e-Munfasil. The Imaams that are not pulling the Madd are reciting according to his method of recitation. However, the general masses who have not studied the science of Qiraat, should pull in Madd-e-Munfasil either by making Tawassut (which is pulling between 3-5 Alifs) or Thool (which is pulling 5 Alifs) according to the Riwaayat of Hafs which is commonly recited by most of the people.

2. We are required to recite the Quraan Sharif correctly, pronouncing every letter from its proper Makhraj and by adhering to all the laws of Tajweed. There is no restriction in terms of the style of recitation in terms of Shariah, whether one reads in his own style, or imitates another. However, when imitating the style of recitation of another Qari, one should ensure that he does not imitate him in his errors, and it should not become a means of pride and arrogance, as is the case for many reciters. May Allah Ta’ala save us all!
