Maintaining family ties
Question:-
What does “maintaining family ties/maintaining ties of kinship” entail?
What is the minimum a person should do?
Which members of a person’s family should family ties be kept with?
Answer:-
At the onset, it should be borne in mind that, joining family ties is an explicit command of Allah Ta’ala and from amongst the noble teachings of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
Allah Ta’ala states in the Quraan-e-Majeed:
“The people of intelligence are… those who join what Allah has commanded to join (i.e. family ties) and they fear their Rabb and they fear an evil reckoning.” (Surah Ra’ad, Verse 21)
Further, it is recorded in a narration:
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Family ties is a branch from Allah, so whoever joins it, then Allah will join him, and whoever cuts it, then Allah will cut him.”
Hazrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that I heard Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam saying, “Whoever wishes that his sustenance is increased, and his life prolonged, then he should join family ties.”
The above verse of the Quraan Sharif and Ahadith clearly indicate towards the importance of maintaining family ties. Maintaining family ties is Waajib (obligatory), and breaking family ties is Haraam. One may maintain family ties (at the bear minimum) by making Salaam, exchanging gifts, assisting each other, sitting, or talking with each other, expressing affection and kindness, occasionally visiting family members to increase in love. In fact, one should visit his relatives weekly or monthly. The (permissible) needs of the relative should not be rejected (but fulfilled according to one’s ability), because not fulfilling their needs results in severing family ties.
Some commentators have stated that it is obligatory (Waajib) to maintain family ties with one’s blood relatives such as one’s Mahaarim. Others have stated that one should maintain relations with all relatives whether one is a Mahram or not. Allama Nawawi Rahimahullah has stated in the commentary of Muslim Sharif that, this (second view) is the correct view which is substantiated through the Ahaadith. However, those who are closer (such as the parents) will have more rights than those who are distant.
