Discarding Items Which Bear Honourable Names
QUESTION:
If a person is named Abu Bakr or Umar or Uthmaan and has it printed in English on a disposable water bottle, is it permissible to discard of it in the bin considering these are names of Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum.
ANSWER:
At the onset, we advise against printing attributes of Allah Ta’ala, names of Ambiya Alaihimus Salaam, Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum, etc., on various items as this is tantamount to disrespect.
Coming to the queried scenario, it is not permissible to throw such bottles in the bin as this is disrespecting the names of Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum. However, if the names are erased, it will be permissible to throw such bottles in the bin.
Allah Ta’ala says in the Quraan Majeed:
وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ (الحجّ آ:32)
“And whosoever honours the Symbols of Allah, then it is indeed from the piety of the heart.”
