A person misquoting text from the Quraan

May 31, 2024 | Quraan-e-Majeed

QUESTION:

A person misquoted an Arabic text and said it is referenced in the Quraan. When he realized that was not from the Quraan, he then uttered “something to this effect.” What is the ruling regarding this matter? He was discussing how Allah Ta’ala does not love those who tell lies.

ANSWER:

One should not incorrectly attribute anything to the Quraan Sharif, as this is tantamount to adding to the Quraan Sharif. Yes, the Quraan Sharif does state that the curse of Allah is upon the liars. A person who is cursed by Allah cannot be beloved by Allah Ta’ala, so the understanding is correct, but there isn’t a clear-cut verse that states that Allah Ta’ala does not love the liars. It is recorded in a narration of Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasai’ee from Abu Zarr Radiallahu Anhu that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Whoever speaks about the Quraan without knowledge, then he should make his abode from the fire of Jahannam.” Another narration states, “Whoever speaks about the Quraan according to his opinion and it turns out to be correct, then too he has erred.” In conclusion, one should not incorrectly attribute anything to the Quraan Sharif or Hadith Sharif, as this is an extremely dangerous practice, as understood from the above-mentioned narrations.

ALLAH TA’ALA ALONE IN HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS BEST!
