Adhaan Without Wudhu

QUESTION:

It is the responsibility of our Imaam to call out the Adhaan. However, after he arrives at the Masjid, he relieves himself and then proceeds to call out the Adhaan. Thereafter he performs Wudhu. Is this correct?

ANSWER:

It is Mustahab to call the Adhaan while in a state of Wudhu; hence, the Muadhin should call the Adhaan in a state of Wudhu. If he gave Adhaan without Wudhu, then too it is valid. However, the Muadhin should not make this a habit.

يستحب أن يكون المؤذن صالحاً وأن يكون على وضوء، ويكره إقامة المحدث وأذانه لما روينا من قوله عليه السلام: “لا يؤذن إلا متوضئ”. واتبعت هذه الرواية لموافقتها لفن الحديث وإن صح عدم كراهة أذان المحدث، وهو ظاهر الرواية والمذهب كما في الدر. (مراقي الفلاح مع حاشية الطحطاوي 610)
وينبغي أن يؤذن ويقيم على طهر فإن أذن على غير وضوء جاز؛ لأنه ذكر وليس بصلاة فكان الوضوء استحبابًا كما في القراءة. (هداية 1/19)
