QUESTION:
Anxiety has become a common issue which many of my friends are experiencing, especially with teenagers in school. Please advise on coping mechanisms which I could share with them, and also explain “anxiety” in a general sense?
ANSWER:
Anxiety is simply restlessness and fear which one suffers due to the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala. People suffer from anxiety for different reasons, hence a general solution cannot be provided for all. One must be able to ascertain the cause of the problem and then provide a suitable solution from a Deeni perspective, as the solution to every problem lies in Deen. One of the main reasons for anxiety is engaging in sins and disobeying the commands of Allah Ta’ala as stated above. In this instance, one will be required to repent, sincerely give up the wrong and please Allah Ta’ala. Together with this, one will be required to engage in certain Wazaa’if or prescriptions from the Quraan and Hadith that will assist one in overcoming the issue such as reciting Durood Sharif excessively, or Istighfaar, or La Hawla Wala Quwwata Illah Billah, etc. Also, one should establish a relationship with some righteous and pious person that is able to guide him or her at every stage. By doing the above, one will be guided and relieved Insha’Allah.
