QUESTION:
What is the ruling on cutting or shaving the hair after performing Umrah? Is it permissible to just trim the hair?
ANSWER:
A person has two options in regard to cutting the hair in order to terminate his Ihram. One may shave the entire head which is referred to as ‘Halq’, or he may trim a quarter of the head which is referred to as Qasr. [Re: Fataawa Uthmaaniyyah Vol:4 Pg:297, Kitaabun Nawaazil Vol:7 Pg:436-437] However, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made Dua thrice for the one who shaves the hair by saying, “May Allah have mercy upon the person who shaves his head.” Then Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made Dua for the person who trims his hair once. In conclusion shaving the head is superior to trimming the hair.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: «رَحِمَ اللهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ» قَالُوا: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: «رَحِمَ اللهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ» قَالُوا: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: «رَحِمَ اللهُ الْمُحَلِّقِينَ» قَالُوا: وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ؟ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: «وَالْمُقَصِّرِينَ» (صحيح مسلم، ج٢ص٩٤٦))
ثم يحلق أو يقصر والحلق أفضل ويكفي فيه ربع الرأس والتقصير أن يأخذ من رؤوس شعره مقدار الأنملة (حاشية الطحطاوي على مراقي الفلاح، ص٧٣٦)
فَدَلَّ أَنَّ الْحَلْقَ أَوْ التَّقْصِيرَ، وَاجِبٌ، لَكِنَّ الْحَلْقَ أَفْضَلُ (بدائع الصنائع، ج٢ص١٤٠)
