Attending Seerah Programmes

QUESTION:

Is it permissible to host or attend Seerah programmes? Are they any different to having Eid Meeladun-Nabi functions, because those have been classified as Bid’ah?

ANSWER:

If by ‘Seerah programme’, you mean a straight-forward Bayaan that is held in the Masjid wherein nothing more than the Seerah of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is discussed, then there is no harm in doing so. In fact, discussing any aspect of the life of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is meritorious and a means of deriving blessings.

However, such talks and discussions should be held throughout the year and not only at fixed or stipulated times of the year. Furthermore, such programmes should not be considered as necessary or compulsory to attend. Yes, one should attend such programmes in order to gain and increase one’s knowledge regrading the Seerah of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

وَمِنْهَا: الْتِزَامُ الْكَيْفِيَّاتِ وَالْهَيْئَاتِ الْمُعَيَّنَةِ، كَالذِّكْرِ بِهَيْئَةِ الِاجْتِمَاعِ عَلَى صَوْتٍ وَاحِدٍ، وَاتِّخَاذُ يَوْمِ وِلَادَةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِيدًا، وَمَا أَشْبَهَ ذَلِكَ.

وَمِنْهَا: الْتِزَامُ الْعِبَادَاتِ الْمُعَيَّنَةِ فِي أَوْقَاتٍ مُعَيَّنَةٍ لَمْ يُوجَدْ لَهَا ذَلِكَ التَّعْيِينُ فِي الشَّرِيعَةِ، كَالْتِزَامِ صِيَامِ يَوْمِ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شعبان وقيام ليلته. (الاعتصام للشاطبي 1/51)
