Participating In A Raffle

QUESTION:

Is it permissible to enter a raffle where you make a purchase worth R10, and you stand a chance of winning sundry items like chocolates, car polishing kits etc.? A portion of the money goes towards purchasing the ticket which is, in turn, given out in charity.

ANSWER:

No, it is not permissible as this is tantamount to gambling.

ويطلق القمار في الاصطلاح الفقهي على كل لعب يشترط فيه غالبا أن يأخذ الغالب شيئا من المغلوب وحقيقته مراهنة على غرر محض (فقه المعاملات 4/128)
