Clothing with the Puma Logo

Aug 27, 2022 | Appearance And Attire

Question:-

Please advise with regard to wearing Puma clothing, as the logo is that of an animal. Can we wear this brand of clothing? What are the harms of wearing clothing with animate objects, or clothing with pictures on them?

Answer:-

The Fuqaha have stated that the following pictures are permitted:

1. The picture of an animate object without the head. There is consensus of the Ummah on this matter.

2. The entire picture remains intact, but it is printed on an area of humiliation such as a carpet upon which people sit. There is consensus of the Ummah on this matter too.

3. Almost all the jurists agree that an extremely small picture on the button (of one’s clothing) or the stone of one’s ring is also acceptable. It is also recorded in Durr-ul-Mukhtaar that a small picture, which is so small that the limbs cannot be noticed by the person that is standing when the picture is placed on the ground is permitted.

Re:- Jawahirul Fiqh Pg.231 Vol.7

Now coming to the Puma picture. If it is a little picture that is generally attached to the shoe, then there should be some concession in wearing such a shoe (particularly when the finer details of the animal cannot be noticed by one that is standing), and due to it being in a place of humiliation. However, if it is a noticeable picture that is printed on one’s clothing, then such clothing will not be permitted unless the head is removed.

By wearing such clothing one prevents the angels from entering one’s home and as such,  we are deprived from the blessings and protection of the angels. It is recorded in a narration of Bukhari and Muslim that the worst form of punishment will be meted to those people who engage in picture-making on the day of Qiyaamah. [Bukhari Pg.880 Vol.2] Yet another narration states that, the picture-maker will be told to give life to what he had created. [Bukhari Pg.880 Vol.2] It is obvious that he will not be able to enter life into the picture and will therefore be punished by Almighty Allah. May Allah Ta’ala protect us. Ameen! No intelligent person will subject himself to such difficulty and hardship (in the hereafter) simply because of desiring a picture of an animal on his garment. May Allah Ta’ala grant us the understanding!
