Dog licking a person while performing Salaah

QUESTION:

A person was performing Salaah outside and while in the Qa’dah position, a dog passed him and licked his forehead. Should he repeat his Salaah?

ANSWER:

The saliva of a dog is impure, hence if the dog licked one’s forehead, then one’s forehead will also become Napaak (impure). However, if the circumference of the wetness is less than the size of a Dirham (which is approximately the size of the palm), then the Salaah will be valid. If the impurity is more than the circumference of a Dirham, then the Salaah will be invalid. However, if one is in doubt with regards to the quantity of the impurity, then one should repeat one’s Salaah as a precautionary measure.

الْكَلْبُ إذَا أَخَذَ عُضْوَ إنْسَانٍ أَوْ ثَوْبَهُ لَا يَتَنَجَّسُ مَا لَمْ يَظْهَرْ فِيهِ أَثَرُ الْبَلَلِ رَاضِيًا كَانَ أَوْ غَضْبَانَ. كَذَا فِي مُنْيَةِ الْمُصَلِّي قَالَ فِي الصَّيْرَفِيَّةِ هُوَ الْمُخْتَارُ. كَذَا فِي شَرْحِهَا لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَلَبِيِّ)الفتاوى الهندية 1/48)

 واعلم أنه (ليس الكلب بنجس العين) عند الإمام وعليه الفتوى ..ولو أخرج حيا ولم يصب فمه الماء لا يفسد ماء البئر ولا الثوب بانتفاضه ولا بعضه ما لم ير ريقه .. قوله ما لم ير ريقه فالمعتبر رؤية البلة وهو المختار نهر عن الصيرفية، وعلامتها ابتلال يده بأخذه(الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 1/208)
