Dwellers of Jannah and Jahannam
Q1. A Hadith mentions something to the effect that 999 people out of 1000 are destined for Jahannam. Are the majority of those people from Yajooj and Majooj?
A1. Yes, regarding the Hadith in the query, majority of the people who will enter Jahannum will be Yajooj and Majooj as explained in the Mubaarak Hadith cited below:

Hadrat Abu Saeed Khudri Radiallahu Anhu reported that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Allah Ta’ala will call out (on the Day of Qiyamah): ‘Oh Adam!’ Adam Alaihis Salaam will reply: ‘I am present, glory be to You and all good is in Your control.’ Allah Ta’ala will say: ‘Gather the people of the fire.’ Adam will say: ‘O Allah! How many are the people of the Fire?’ Allah Ta’ala will reply: ‘Nine-hundred and ninety-nine of every one thousand.’ It will be at that time that young people will go grey, every pregnant female will have a miscarriage, and one will think mankind intoxicated, yet they will not be intoxicated, and dreadful will be the punishment of Allah.” [Surah Haj, Ayah: 2]
The Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum asked: ‘O Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam! Who is that one [out of one thousand]?’ Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam replied: ‘Rejoice; there will be one of you and one thousand from Yajooj and Majooj.’ Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam also said: ‘By that Being who controls my life, I hope that you [my Ummah] will be one quarter of the people of Jannah.’
The Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum shouted: ‘Allahu Akbar!’ Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam continued: ‘By that Being who controls my life, I hope that you [my Ummah] will be one third of the people of Jannah.’
The Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum shouted, ‘Allahu Akbar!’ Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam then said: ‘I hope that you will be half of the people of Jannah.’
The Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum shouted, ‘Allahu Akbar’ Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam added: ‘You are-in comparison to the rest of mankind-like a single black hair on the skin of a white ox, or like a single white hair on the skin of a black ox.’
Q2. From the people who are destined for Jannah without account, are they 70 000, from which 1000 will be another 70 000?
A2. The Hadith which you are referring to is recorded below which mentions that, 70 000 people will enter Jannah without accountability. May Allah Ta’ala make us amongst them. Aameen.
However, we could not locate any narration that says from every one thousand of the 70 000, will be another 70 000.
Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhuma reported that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam once came out to us and said, “Some nations were displayed before me. A Nabi would pass in front of me with one man, and another with two men, and another with a group of people, and another with nobody with him. Then I saw a great crowd covering the horizon and I wished that they were my followers, but it was said to me, ‘This is Moosa Alaihis Salaam and his followers.’
Then it was said to me, ‘Look’! I looked and saw a big gathering with a large number of people covering the horizon. It was said, ‘Look this way and that way.’ So, I saw a big crowd covering the horizon.
Then it was said to me, ‘These are your followers, and among them there are 70,000 who will enter Paradise without (being asked about their) accounts.’ Then the people dispersed and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did not tell who those 70,000 were. So, the Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum started talking about that and some of them said, “With regards to us, we were born in the era of heathenism, but then we believed in Allah Ta’ala and His Apostle Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam . We think however, that these (70,000) are our offspring.” This eached Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam who said, “These (70,000) are the people who do not draw an evil omen from (birds) and do not get treated by branding themselves, and do not treat with Ruqya, but put their trust (only) in their Lord.” Then ‘Ukkasha bin Muhsin Radiallahu Anhu got up and said, “O Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam! Am I one of those (70,000)?” Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Yes.” Then another person got up and said, “Am I one of them?” Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ” ‘Ukkasha has surpassed you.”
