Etiquettes of Dua

Apr 12, 2023 | Duaas

Question:-

Please advise regarding the etiquettes of making Dua. How should one begin their Dua,  and who should one make Dua for first?

Answer:-

Dua is an important component in the life of a Believer, to the extent that Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam has referred to Dua as “a weapon of the Believer”. Any form of Ibaadat that is carried out, fulfilling all its etiquettes, with the sole intention of pleasing Allah Ta’ala, there is hope of it being accepted in the court of Allah Ta’ala.

Hereunder, we have listed a few basic etiquettes of Dua:

  1. Dua should be made with humility, concentration and devotion.
  2. Dua should be made while facing the Qiblah.
  3. Dua should be made in a state of Wudhu.
  4. Some of the occasions when Duas are accepted are as follows; the last portion of the night (before Subh Saadiq), at the time of Adhaan, the time between Adhaan and Iqaamah, after the Fardh Salaah, before sunset on the day of Jumuah, at the time of rain, and at the time of completion of the Quraan Sharif.
  5. Raise one’s hands (in line with the chest) when making Dua.
  6. Commence the Dua with praising Allah Ta’ala.
  7. Recite Durood upon Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam when commencing and completing the Dua.
  8. Dua should be made through the Waseelah (intercession) of the beautiful names of Allah Ta’ala.
  9. As far as possible make the Duas which have been cited in the Quraan and Ahaadith, as these are extremely effective.
  10. Dua should not be made for any sinful act or to sever family ties.
  11. One should make Dua with full fervour, hope and conviction in Allah Ta’ala.

Re:- Fataawa Darul Uloom Zakariyya Vol.9 Pg.351-354

When making Dua, one should commence with himself, then one’s parents, then one’s siblings and children, and thereafter, the entire Ummah at large. One should commence the Dua with the praises of Allah, followed by Durood Sharif, and it should be completed with Durood and the praises of Allah Ta’ala.
