QUESTION:
If a woman’s ankles accidentally become exposed during Salaah, will her Salaah be invalidated?
ANSWER:
A female should ensure that her ankles are covered while performing Salaah. However, if her ankles are exposed in Salaah, it will not invalidate her Salaah. The Fuqaha have mentioned that if a quarter of a limb is exposed in Salaah for the duration of 3 Subhanallah, then this will invalidate one’s Salaah. If less than a quarter the limb is exposed, or quarter of a limb (which needs to be covered) is exposed for less than three Subhanallah, then one’s Salaah will not be invalidated.
Now, the ankle joint is where your shin bone (tibia), calf bone (fibula) and talus bone meet. This indicates that the ankle is part of the shin. Since the ankle is not equal to a quarter of the shin, the validity of the Salaah will not be affected if the ankles are exposed in Salaah.
الساق من المرأة و شعرها النازل و بطنها و فخذها كل ذالك عضو على حدة …فلو انكشفها منها الربع في الصلاة لم تجز …لا تفسد الصلاة بانكشاف القليل من العورة وإن طال إلى أداء ركن(فتاوى اللكهنوي ص248)
قاعدہ يہ ہے کہ اگر سہوا ربع عضو تين بار سبحان ربي الاعلی کہنے کي مقدار تک کھلا رہے تو نماز فاسد ہو جاتي ہے اور قصدا ربع عضو سے کم ستر کھلا خواہ سہوا يا عمدا ہو تين تسبيح کي مقدار سے کم ہو يا زيادہ بہر حال مفسد نہيں (احسن الفتاوی 3/402)
