QUESTION:
My husband is Shafi and I am Hanafi. Which Madhab should my children follow? How will the consumption of shellfish affect my family?
ANSWER:
If your children attended a Hanafi Madrasah and grew up following the Hanafi school of thought, then they will be regarded as Hanafi. And if they grew up attending a Shafi’ee Madrasah and following the Shafi’ee school of thought, then they will be regarded as Shafi’ees. The followers of the Shafi’ee Madhab may consume shellfish but not the followers of the Hanafi Madhab even though all may be living together as a family in one home.
